Jake Ludington's Digital Lifestyle - I made a mistake

I try to be cautious in the information I provide, to be sure I'm providing the best advice possible on a subject. Occasionally I get things wrong.
My recent article titled "Public WiFi Security How to Stay Safe on Free Public WiFi" was one of those instances where I was wrong.
LogMeIn Hamachi, the VPN service I recommended in that article is a great service.
If you want to connect to other computers that are also on your Hamachi VPN, the scenario I described would work great for keeping your data safe.
For general surfing the Internet and signing in at password protected sites, LogMeIn Hamachi as I described it would be useless. I have corrected the article with an alternate solution.

If you want to keep your data protected using a free VPN service, Hotspot Shield is the way to go.
When Hotspot Shield is installed and active on your computer, it re-routes all Web traffic on your computer through a secure connection.
To configure Hotspot Shield, you simply download and install the software, then turn it on when you connect to a network that would normally be insecure.
You may want to uncheck the 4 boxes related to secure search and file not found redirects, you can search securely simply by using Google SSL instead of the regular Google search.

The only potential downside to Hotspot Shield is they do show a few ads in your browser. You can easily turn off their ads, but you will need to do so each time you use Hotspot Shield.

Another solution I frequently use is to connect to a computer at my house via

LogMeIn and use the browser on my home connection to sign in to password protected sites. The connection from my laptop to my house is secure and encrypted. I trust the connection at my house, so the security level is high enough to safely check my bank account and perform other sensitive functions.
As you may notice, it's the same company as the Hamachi service, but a different product. When I originally looked at LogMeIn Hamachi, I was viewing it as a replacement for this method, because I didn't want to leave a computer turned on at my house all the time.
Unforutnately, my understanding about how Hamachi works was wrong.

Again, I apologize for the misinformation.
