Attorney General Eric Holder shocked many last week when he abandoned the legal defense of marriage in federal court. At the direction of President Obama, our nation's chief law enforcement officer announced that the Justice Department will not defend in court a federal law that defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
That law, the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was passed in 1996 by overwhelming veto-proof majorities in both the House and Senate and signed into law by President Clinton.
But our President, who is obligated under the Constitution to "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed" has decided that a law recognizing marriage as God defines it is unconstitutional and not worth defending!
President Obama's decision not to defend DOMA puts this law in jeopardy since homosexual advocates have sued in federal court, charging that the law is unconstitutional. If federal courts go ahead and toss this law, state laws limiting marriage to a man and a woman would be next.
That's why the U.S. House of Representatives, which has the legal authority to intervene in defense of DOMA, must step in and mount a vigorous defense of this law.
In a statement issued last week, Coral Ridge Ministries deplored President Obama's action and called on Congress to intervene.
We are stunned and saddened by the decision of President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to abandon the legal defense of marriage in federal court.
We call on Congress to step in to vigorously defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act.
Please join us in urging Speaker Boehner to do what the Justice Department refuses to do: defend the God-ordained foundation of any healthy and flourishing society.
Speaker Boehner has said he likely will step in on behalf of this law but he needs to hear from the pro-family side. Homosexual advocates are mobilizing in opposition. Please make sure your voice is heard today!
