Pegasus will create and empty city

It seems like all the buzz these days with regards to sustainability is about the "Smart City" – Smart grids, renewable energy technology, next-gen wireless, and grid cyber security are just a few of the buzz words I've grown accustomed to hearing. Even unlikely magazines such as

Scientific American had a special issue on Better, Smarter Cities.

A consulting firm from DC is developing a "Test City" in the New Mexico dessert to experiment with these emerging technologies. The $200M city with no residents will act as a giant laboratory analyzing the best ways for modern cities to adopt to the latest green and high-tech solutions to resolve today's urban problems.

It will be used to test everything from domestic solar panels to mass transit management and ways to deal with acts of terrorism. The city will make most of its money with access charges and user fees for access to test environments allowing various groups and companies to run simulations and gauge the impact their technology might have on a full-scale environment.

The city built in the New Mexico desert could accommodate a non-existent  population of 35,000 with all the attributes of a real city.

According to an article from Domain.com, one public cynic noted that it would be easier to simply use Detroit as a test city.

While there are sure to be issues, I think the idea of creating a lab to test emerging technologies in a realistic environment is a great way to advance green solutions.
