A Hope Township man accused of killing his pet dog by placing it inside a burning wood stove has been sent for a forensic psychiatric exam to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
Reed Mathew Compton, 39, was charged with one felony count of killing or torturing animals, which is punishable by up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The incident occurred on Dec. 19 at Compton's East Shaffer Road home, and was investigated by the Midland County Sheriff's Office.
The transcript of a preliminary hearing conducted on Jan. 11 before Midland County District Court Judge Stephen P. Carras records the words of the only witness, Compton's father, Robert Compton.
Robert testified he was at his son's home to help cut wood and his son's dog — named Miss Kitty — was running around, had dug in the grass and approached the road a couple times. Reed called the dog back, and decided to put it inside the house, which he did alone.
Robert said after being outside a few minutes cutting wood alone, he went into the home and found strange noises coming from the wood stove. He described the noises as "a scratching, rumbling a little bit," and said he asked Reed if there was a chimney fire.
"And he said, 'No, I just throwed my dog in there,'" Robert recalled his son's words. Robert testified he was stunned and scared by the incident, so he left. Once he returned to his own home, he called mental health, and was advised to call 911.
