JOIN THE CALL
Dear friends,
On September 16, 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini died after being arrested and severely beaten by the so-called morality police for not wearing a 'proper' hijab and showing a bit of hair.

Since her death, thousands of women in Iran have bravely taken to the streets to demand justice and freedom – with protests spreading all over the world, from New York, to Stockholm, to Istanbul.

This is the latest wave of people-powered protests challenging the Ayatollah's brutal rule, and the persecution of pro-democracy voices, women, artists and students. Now, as one local protester put it, "we need the world not to abandon us".

Let's all stand in solidarity with the women of Iran by building a massive global call to dismantle the so-called morality police – and Avaaz will work with women's groups to deliver our voices to the media and key governments to use as leverage to stop the war on women. Join now and share widely!
The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Iran has ratified, guarantees people's rights to freedom of expression, privacy, and freedom of religion. But, hundreds of human rights defenders, lawyers, activists, and members of ethnic and religious minorities are serving prison sentences for peaceful dissent after unfair trials.

Protests are not new in Iran, but this new eruption of outrage is unprecedented, and it's led by women who are directly challenging the enforcement of laws that force them to cover up in public.

The mass protests have become an uncomfortable challenge to the regime, which is responding with brutal force against the peaceful demonstrators, with over 70 people killed according to some accounts.

For the sake of Amini's memory, all the women in Iran who are rising against injustice, and for the people who alone are resisting a regime that is not afraid of killing peaceful demonstrators – let's honour their bravery with a huge avalanche of global public solidarity. Sign the call and tell everyone to join!
Avaaz has consistently stood up for women's rights everywhere, calling for the right to education, bodily autonomy, the right to choose what to wear, and the right to stay alive. Women in Iran are fighting to be seen, to be heard, and to be free. Let us stand with them in their fight for freedom and justice.

With hope and determination,

Abdelrahman, Laura, Luis, Mohammad, Banafshe, Antonia and the whole Avaaz team
